| Dubai: Renowned painter M F Husain, submitted his passport in Doha after he was provided the Qatari citizenship rights.
Hussain, who has attained an age of 95 years, has been charged with a series of cases filed in India in 2006 for his contentious portrayal of Hindu goddesses through his paintings. His residence was also targeted and his paintings were disfigured by Hindu fundamentalists.
After remaining in self-enforced exile for around 4 years, the world-class painter ultimately acknowledged Qatar's nationality.
Surrendering the Indian passport was essential as India does not acknowledge double citizenship. From now onwards Hussain will not be referred as an Indian national. The painter also requested an application for the OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card. |
