Washington, Sep 2: China has been adding to its military presence and power in the Indian Ocean region, which is a crucially strategic location. A well known American expert has asked the Obama administration to become India's partner and counter China's influence in the area. The Indian Ocean is increasing in importance to China with every passing day with regards to security and economy. Dean Cheng, Heritage Foundation, has termed this strategy of China to be like a pearl string. Cheng feels that as per this plan China would become friends with India’s neighbours. This would help China to beef up its economy and security properly. Cheng has also said that this strategy would help China to counter India's rise.

Cheng opines that it is crucial that US does not fall behind China when it comes to the Indian Ocean region. He has asked US to keep a steady profile in the region. This would help US state its resolve clearly. They would also be spared the difficulties of gaining a re-entry in a region.

Cheng feels that in the future the strategic planners of China would have to pay more attention to the Indian Ocean area and look for more than just economic growth or sustenance.
