| Sydney: As the spate of attacks on Indians in Australia continue to give worries to India, Australia's foreign minister today admitted before the parliament that some of the recent cases of violence against Indian students were racially motivated, which had damaged Australia's reputation as a hospitable country.
Offering condolences to the family of Indians attacked in Australia, Stephen Smith urged lawmakers that the main priority is to revive Australia's image, which has been damaged recently.
Coming out in the open with his views, Smith added that recent attacks on Indians have represented Australia in poor light. He further assured strict punishment to those who are proven guilty of racial attacks. He also reiterated the fact that such incidents have affected Australia's education links and cross-border relationship.
Australian officials had earlier played down racism as a reason behind the attacks on Indians, which resulted in media outrage in India affecting Australia's education export industry. |
