Beijing, May 29: The 87-year-old sister of Dwarkanath Kotnis, a well-known medical practitioner who provided medical assistance during the Second China-Japanese war in 1938, has been invited to an India-China friendship gathering here by President Pratibha Patil.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao told reporters that Patil had invited Kotnis' sister to the Friends of India in China gathering today, which will also be attended by the Indian president, who is on a six-day visit to China.

Vatsala Kotnis had visited the city earlier too.

Dwarkanath Kotnis was one of the five Indian physicians who were dispatched to China to provide medical assistance during the Second Sino-Japanese war. Besides being known for his dedication and perseverance, Kotnis has also been regarded as an example for Sino-Indian friendship and collaboration.

He is remembered by the Chinese people for his selfless work. (IANS)
