Johannesburg, June 20: A former chief of the Rwandan army and ex-ambassador to India who fled to South Africa earlier this year was shot at by an unidentified gunman here on Saturday, media reports said.

Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, former army chief of Rwanda, and his wife were returning from shopping when a gunman opened fire at their car. He got injured in his stomach and was immediately taken to hospital, media reported citing a statement from the South African Press Association.

"He was shot in the stomach during the midday attack and is now undergoing surgery in a Johannesburg clinic," the report said Saturday.

Nyamwasa was accused by Rwandan authorities of being involved in a bomb attack in the country earlier this year. The former army chief fled to South Africa after resigning as the country's ambassador to India. (IANS)
