New Delhi, May 5: The relationship between India and the European Union had been one motivated by economical reasons but now things may change as countries like Finland are gearing up for ties to become strategic.

The Foreign Minister of Finland, Alexander Stubb, told the media that India has risen above the mire of regional importance and was a prominent world player given its relations with Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. He also lauded the role being played by India in context of the peacekeeping efforts of the United Nations.

Stubb had interacted with Shiv Shankar Menon, the National Security Adviser of India and the Union External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna when he visited the country for the first time.

Stubb is a strong advocate of multi-polarity and has stressed on the need for a change in the attitude of the European Union that focuses primarily on crises situations. He said that the European Union has not been paying enough attention to forging ties with nations like China, Brazil and Russia that, along with India, have been coming up the economic ladder.

Stubb also supports India’s claims for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council and his support stems from the fact that India has been taking rapid strides as a nation. Regarding the Jammu and Kashmir issue he has said that a solution needs to be reached multilaterally as it has been impossible to find a solution through bilateral discussions.
