New Delhi, June 18: Conrad, a US resident who has 43 stents in his body and is recovering well at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), could have lost his life had he been an hour late, doctors said today.

"Conrad is in a better condition. Regular check-ups are being done," A.K. Bisoi, associate professor of cardiac surgery at AIIMS, told the media.

The 58-year-old man, who prefers to use only one name, was rushed to the AIIMS emergency 11 a.m. on Tuesday following chest pain and got his 42nd and 43rd stents implanted in his body.

"Conrad was brought (to the emergency) at 11 a.m. A CT scan showed that the last of the four vein grafts implanted in a bypass 20 years ago were blocked. He needed immediate stenting. (Had he been) an hour late, it would have cost him his life," Bisoi said.

Conrad previously had two failed open-heart bypass surgeries. He has a family history of early death from heart diseases. His father died at 51 and his grandfather in his early 40s.

Bisoi said the stents get dissolved with time and have side effects varying from one patient to the other.

"Conrad will require regular check-ups in the near future," the doctor said. (IANS)
