New Delhi: It is turning out to be more than an uphill task for Congress to make the Women's Reservation Bill a law as the allies of Congress continues to protest over the bill. It is being anticipated that Congress will put the quota bill on hold. Owing to the constant pressure from the supporters Congress is now mulling on putting the bill on hold and not to bring it to the Lok Sabha. They are likely to present the bill prior to the 2014 General Elections.
Although UPA enjoys a comfortable majority and the support of the Left and the Bharatiya Janata Party, yet it will be difficult for the Government to go ahead with the quota bill in the Lok Sabha.
Trinamool Congress, which is an important ally of UPA, is causing a major obstruction as the party chief Mamata Banerjee refuses to allow her party MPs to vote for the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. Trinamool Congress has 19 MPs in the Lok Sabha and two in the Rajya Sabha.
The party's stand can play a role crucial in ensuring that the bill passes through the Lok Sabha before the legislation becomes a law.
UPA chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi was quite elated after the Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha. She is still confident of the Bill sailing through the Lok Sabha also. |
