| New Delhi: There has been a countrywide protest against the introduction of Bt Brinjal in India with common people joining the NGOs and farmers in launching mass movements against such an unsustainable idea. Now that the Indian government has declared its verdict to put a stay on the introduction of Bt Brinjal, Twitter users have welcomed the decision collectively and wholeheartedly as reflected from their tweets.
Advocating the idea of Jairam Ramesh that independent scientific studies have to be established for the satisfaction of both public and professionals, the tweeples showered in their opinions on this issue. One of the twitterers tweet, ".. hope tests do happen unlike hackneyed Commission reports that are produced years later." Supporting the series of anti-Bt Brinjal movements that were launched across India one of the tweeples tweets, "Rejecting #Bt.Brinjal by Gov of India holds lessons for civil society movement."
A sense of relief was also eveident in the reactions of some of the tweeples as one says, "Thank God BT Brinjal is not gong to flood the mandi! (market) Im just relieved for baigan (brinjal) lovers....I hate bharta." One of the tweeples recollect how companies like "Monsanto illegally sold BT brinjal seeds to Gujarat farmers."
Green Peace (@greenpeaceindia), an independent global campaigning organisation, expressed their satisfaction at government's decision and considered that the Bt Brinjal battle is won. The organization states, "Jairam Ramesh announces a moratorium on #btbrinjal. Congratulations to everyone who supported the campaign!"
It is to be noted that GM crops have been first introduced 15 years ago and even now they are grown in a handful of countries. In India, less than three percent of crop land is planted with GM crops. |
