| Barasat (West Bengal): The West Bengal government is planning to modify its Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act, Minister of Agricultural Marketing Mortaza Hossain said here today.
"The state is planning to amend or modify the APMC Act so that we can employ self-help groups to procure raw vegetables and fruits from the farmers and later sell it to the industries (retail, cold chains)," the minister said at a press conference after inaugurating West Bengal's first integrated cold chain facility.
The cold chain facility has been built by Keventer.
The minister said an amendment is needed to the act, which prevents industry players from directly purchasing raw material from farmers. The state government is averse to contract farming, hence it does not allow multinational corporations to procure vegetables from farmers.
State Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said: "The state government feels that the land ownership of farmers must not be disturbed. We are in favour of the self-help group model."
The Agricultural Marketing Board of the state government would soon enter into a pact with Keventer for modernisation of terminal markets, Keventer's chairman Mahendra Kumar Jalan said. (IANS) |
