New Delhi: Close on the heels of nuke deals with the United States and France, India is all set to strike a similar nuclear deal with its all-weather friend Russia during the maiden visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's in December. The chance of the third bilater nuclear deal after 45-member Nuclear Suppliers' Group lifted the nuclear trade embargo on India on September, 6, got a boost today when Russia appreciated India's "impeccable" credentials on non-proliferation front.

India's External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today held talks in the national capital regarding the modalities of the deal. During the meeting the two representatives of the respective governments finalised the groundwork for signing of the deal between the two countries. Russia has agreed to set up four additional nuclear reactors in Tamil Nadu, where its presence is seen in Kalpakkam.

Setting things in proper perspective, Mukherjee said after the meeting, "We are making all efforts to make the Russian President's visit a successful and landmark visit. The India-Russia strategic partnership is an important factor for stability not only in the south Asian region but in the world."

Mukherjee's view was stamped by Lavrov in the same press conference, when he said, "India has an impeccable record in non-proliferation. That's why we supported India in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and in the NSG," Lavrov said. The Russian Foreign Minister was also supported India's candidature for United Nations' Security Council.

The nuclear pact had been agreed upon in theory during the visit of the former president of Russia, Vladimir Putin during his visit to India in January, 2007. Medvedev is scheduled to visit to India on December 3-5.
