New Delhi: In the backdrop of recent floods in Bihar caused by the Kosi river, senior officials of India and Nepal will meet in Kathmandu on Monday to look at long-term solutions to the recurring problem besides exploring ways to better utilise the common river waters. The Joint Committee on Water Resources, which last met four years ago, will discuss various issues, including project reports on two upcoming dams in Nepal and means to control floods.

The two sides will particularly focus on ways to check floods that cause havoc on both sides. The two countries will discuss ways to improve the implementation of the 1954 Kosi Water Treaty, which governs maintenance of the river and usage of its water.

Lacunae in the implementation of the Treaty were highlighted when a breach in the Kosi river embankment in Nepal led to the floods in Bihar. The finalisation of detailed project reports (DPRs) on Saptakosi High Dam Multipurpose Project and Sunkosi Storage- cum-Diversion Scheme will be on the agenda of the proposed meeting.

The Indian delegation will be led by Water Resources Secretary U N Panjiar. Prior to the Joint Committee meeting, Ganga Water Commissioner S P Kakran was in Nepal to prepare background papers and decide on the agenda for the upcoming meet. (PTI)
