New York: In a campaign to plant billion trees introduced by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in November 2006, India stands at the ninth rank in its roll of honour by registering 96 million trees.

Around 167 nations participated in this initiative. The governments and the civil society were asked to record the number of trees that have seeded in their respective nations.

UNEP has set the initial target of planting at least one billion trees globally each year. An olive which was seeded in Ethiopia in November 2007 was the billionth tree.

Later UNEP decided to set a new target of planting seven billion trees, after the programme reached the mark of two billion in May 2008. In the corresponding period this year the campaign hit four billion mark.

According to UNEP authorities, India could be greater in the ranking because the nation did not officially register or addressed all its programmes.

Director of communications at UNEP, Satinder Bindra stated that India could have seeded a billion of trees in the current year but the plantings were not registered with the programme.
