New Delhi: Trees have been considered as the lung of the earth without which the very existence of life is not possible. But reeling under the pressure of hapazard growth, fast expanding cities like Delhi is becoming vulnerable for citizen due to its diminishing environmental health. People chop-down trees to give way for developmental projects like metro, roads, residential complexes and malls and in the process loose not only fresh air but also natural beauty.
In the grim scenario like this, Delhities have a silver lining. An non-governmental organisation- Swecha has picked-up the task to make the city greener through a campaign named- 'Monsoon Wooding'.
Swecha has planted near 600 trees all over the city with the help of the students of St Stephens and other colleges. The initiative also continued for today in the posh Vasant Kunj area of South Delhi.
Students planted 100 plants in 3 hours by managing plants, manure and fertilizer. The group follow the mantra of 3 Ps- plant, protect and promote, in nurturing the environment.
The students had to do a lot of effort to come out with the permission from Delhi government, Delhi Development Authority and other municipal agencies and have to face several hurdles in the process.
One of the volunteers Lopa told headlinesindia, "We get plant samples from the nursery of Humayun Tomb, and after the exhibition we sell all those plants to the big shops like Khan Market to manage some funds. We then plan the next event."
Their main motto is to make the city free from pollution and plant Sheesham, Kacnhar, Kanesh, Hibiscus, Neem, Diapherus. The NGO hopes to get better results in future as well and wishes that their efforts would make people for awaken towards establishing and maintaining the environment friendly world. |
