767 villages in Himachal excluded from the wildlife sanctuary areas

Shimla: J.P. Nadda, Forest Minister said that due to the sincere efforts of the State Government, National Wildlife Board in its meeting held under the chairmanship of Shri Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest in Delhi on Thursday, agreed to exclude 767 villages from the wildlife sanctuary areas in Himachal.

He said that the proposal will come into force after the approval from the Supreme Court. He revealed that Chief Minister Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal has personally met the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest in this regard a number of time and persuaded him for it.

Nadda added that on the recommendation of State Government regarding rationalization of wildlife sanctuaries an expert committee constituted by National Wildlife Board visited Himachal during the month of April and finally submitted its report, agreeing to the proposal of the State Government.

Forest Minister said that in Himachal Pradesh, forests are located in proximity to the villages and almost in all activities, the local people are involved and there was a need to maintain an equilibrium between developmental needs and conservation. He said that notable feature of the rationalization was that it would not only bring relief to about 1.13 lac population in 767 villages.
