| Bangalore: Legendary classical singer Girija Devi laments the fact that the popularity of Hindustani classical music is slowly ebbing away as singers are not drawn towards the tradition of Gharana.
The veteran singer, who is popularly known as the 'Queen of Thumri' rued the fact that this rich genre of music is losing its hold on the practitioners of music.
While talking to the media, Girija Devi stated that the modern society is a playground of a mix of all music and only few singers uphold the purity of Gharana. The ones who still uphold the genre hail from the older generations.
The 80-year-old singer, who herself is an ardent follower of Hindustani classical music, regretted the fact that only a handful of singers are trying to make this style of 'Banaras Gharana' (Girija Devi hails from the same Gharana) sustain for longer time.
The singer further added that young singing talents nowadays crave for fame, glory and money and that too within a short period of time. This leads to ignoring of Hindustani classical music that needs to be practised with devotion. |
