New Delhi: After seven years of hiatus, director Goldie Behl makes a comeback on the
silver screen with a fantasy superhero film Drona. Shot in soothing
locations of Bikaner, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Namibia, the film deals
with a fight between good and bad. Here, Abhishek plays an unconventional
superhero Drona, a saviour of the world while Kay Kay Menon plays an evil
magician Ritz, who wants to kill Drona to have his control over the whole
world. On the other hand Priyanka Chopra plays the bodyguard to Drona.
Like Behl's previous movie Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, Drona, too, is a major
disappointment. The direction is lacklustre, screenplay is pathetic and the
storyline is senseless. An amateur director would have done a much better
job than what Goldie has done. It's surprising what inspired the one film
old director to make a big budgeted film in such a awful manner.
Now talking of the film, it starts with Priyanka Chopra's voice-over
narrating the journey of Drona. Drona is Aditya's story, who has never known
love. And it's about his journey to understand his identity. Riz Raizada
(Kay Kay Menon), a descendant of the Asuras soon enters the scene. He is
desperate for a precious secret ? amrit (divine nector). And to acquire
that, he has to defeat Drona. Problem is, he does not know who Drona is.
One fateful day, both come face to face. Riz notices a golden kada (bangle)
in Drona's wrist and gets to know that he is Drona. Riz's men chase him but
he is saved by Sonia (Priyanka Chopra). She makes Aditya realize his true
identity and takes him to meet his mother Jayati Devi (Jaya Bachchan). Thus
begins Drona's journey.
Sameer Arya's cinematography is below average. The lighting is too dark at
some places, though some sequences are well executed. One was when Kay Kay
Menon turns Jaya Bachchan into a statue and other is the train sequence.
These two sequences are breathtaking.
On the performance front, Abhishek Bachchan is convincing in his role.
Priyanka Chopra looks hot and has played her part perfectly. Her martial
arts looks better. Kay Kay Menon looks more like a clown than a villain. His
fans would be hugely disappointed. Jaya Bachchan is gracious in her small
role. The first half is highly boring while the second half has only a
little to entertain. The series of scenes are unplugged and disconnected.
Also, the dialogues are irritating. It is hard to sit through three our long
movie. Priyanka's favourite dialogue 'Bauji kehte the' is repeatedly used in
the film which is quite unbearable.
The music by Dhruv Ghanekar is a mixed bag. The first track is the title
track sung by Dhruv himself. The track gives an introduction of Drona. The
other song 'Oop Cha' is full of masti and is the most popular song of the
film on the chart buster. The third song 'Nanhe Nanhe' by Sadhna Sargam is
pleasing to hear. The remaining two songs 'Bandagi' and 'Khushi' are not
only slow but extremely boring as well. All the songs are just about average
with nothing new in them.
In short, the promos looked great but the film isn't. Drona is rather Rona
for most of its audience who will only look for some smiling and cheerful
moments during the three hour torture.
