| Kolkata: The 15th Kolkata Film Festival starts today, 10th November, 2009. It would be running till the 17th November, 2009. This festival would showcase the best in world cinema and would feature masterpieces of some of the prominent directors from the world of parallel cinema.
The films that are being showcased in the 15th Kolkata Film Festival have been divided into several categories - Contemporary World Cinema, Documentary Films, Centenary Tribute, Homage, Short Films, Marquez on Celluloid, Encounter, Honour, Mexico in Focus, Indian Select, Remembering World War II, Discovery, Passage through Darkness, Children's Screen and Experimental films.
The films are going to be shown across 10 venues - Nandan I, SRFTI, Nandan II, New Empire Cinema, Nandan III, Purbashree, Rabindra Sadan, Madhusudan Mancha, Sisir Mancha and Girish Mancha.
This year the 15th Kolkata Film Festival the Centenary Tribute would be paid to eminent names Elia Kazan from the USA and Bimal Roy. Some of the films of Elia Kazan that would be showcased in this festival are Boomerang and A Streetcar Named Desire. The prominent works of Bimal Roy that would be shown in this showpiece event are Bandini and Do Bigha Zameen.
The Indian Select is one of the most awaited sections of the 15th Kolkata Film Festival as it provides a peek into some of the finest cinema being made in India. Basundhara is one of the most eagerly awaited films in this category. It was made by Hiren Bora in Assamese in 2009. Yet another prominent name in this section is Calcutta News made in Malayalam by Blessy in 2008. The Marathi film Gandha by Sachin Kundakar that was made in 2009 features in this list as well.
