Manna Dey to get Dada Saheb Phalke award

New Delhi: It is a reward for the unfathomable contribution of a legendary singer and a token of respect. Renowned play back singer Manna Dey has been the chosen for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for the year 2007.

The news was stated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting today. The officials added that the name of this 90 year old singer was finalised earlier this week by a five-member committee. Manna Dey will be conferred the award in a ceremony, which will be held on October 21st. President Pratibha Patil will felicitate this veteran singer on that day.

Noted for his heartfelt singing style and versatility, Manna Dey remains an expensive asset for the Indian music fraternity. Counted as one of the greatest playback singers in Indian cinema, Manna Dey ruled the music industry from the 1950s to the 1970s. With more than 3,500 songs under his belt, he has certainly gifted a fresh and unique style to his contemporary music. Both his Bengali and Hindi songs have captured hearts of the millions.

Dada Saheb Phalke award is considered the highest honour in Indian Cinema, named after the father of Indian cinema.
