| In a novel initiative to give recognition to the Best Indian Twitterer, HeadlinesIndia started off with Hiflyers awards 2009. Tweeple were invited to vote for their favourite Indian twitterer. This was perhaps for the first time that such online poll was etched out by any Indian media on Twitter.
The Best Indian Twitter category also gave freedom to every Twitter user to nominate their friends. They could also nominate themselves for this category. In less than a week, more than 1000 votes were registered, with the list of nominations crossing five hundred.
Presently, the top 10 Twitterers not only include the names of the big shots from Bollywood and media but also the non-celebrities on Twitter. Hiflyers awards 2009 offers a rare opportunity to discover how many committed followers you have. Would they nominate you for the Best Indian Twitterer award?
The results till 25th December reveal that out of the top 10 Twitterers, 3 are from the non-celebrity group. The leading Twitterer is presently a Web/Graphic Designer from Manipal named Chetan (@cheth). He leads the bandwagon with a whooping 105 votes leaving behind Shahid Kapoor in the second spot with only 69 votes.
The Hiflyers awards 2009 has brought along with it a host of surprises as the popularity index of the non-celebs seems to be no less than the Twitter celebrities. Ranjith K Avarachan, who claims to be just a blogger, has surpassed Abhishek Bachchan, Shreya Ghosal and others to climb up to 5th position with 39 votes. Even Nishtha Jain, a student from Jaipur has made her way to the 4th position just after Priyanka Chopra.
Bollywood celebrities - Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Gul Panag, Vivek Oberoi and Shreya Ghosal are currently among the top 10 Twitterers. Shahsi Tharoor is another celebrity, who features in the top 10 list.
The voting is still on for the Best Indian Twitterer of the Year 2009. It is quite evident that non-celebrities on Twitter are surging ahead by throwing a challenge to a band of celebrities. It is now just a matter of few days before the Best Twitterer of the Year is announced. |
