Chandigarh: Almost a month after its student was arrested on molestation charges in Boston, the US, Panjab University (PU) today decided to debar him from appearing in the exams and started the process of expelling him from the institution.

Nitin Jindal, 22, a student of the fifth semester in the University Institute of Law Studies (UILS), had gone to the US to participate in the 56th session of Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN), held in Boston from Feb 11-14. He was arrested on Feb 14 following a Boston resident's complaint of molestation and is currently out on bail.

According to a university spokesman, a committee headed by the dean of university instructions recommended debarring Jindal from appearing in the exams and the vice-chancellor approved it.

The process for Jindal's rustication from the university will be started as per rules, he added.

This year UILS officially sent 21 students to participate in the HNMUN event but Jindal was not a part of the official team. He applied online in his individual capacity and was allowed to attend the festival.

Jindal's passport and visa documents were confiscated by the Boston police and he has been directed not to leave the US till April 6, when the next hearing of the case is slated.

In the wake of the incident, the university committee, probing the case, has for the time being banned all foreign trips of varsity students. (IANS)
