New Delhi: The human resource development (HRD) ministry appointed expert committee has found that some of the deemed universities likely to face blacklisting are like family-run institutions, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

"In respect of these 44 deemed institutions, the review committee had found family controlled management architecture, unrelated academic programmes and deviation from the original mandate of grant of deemed to be university status," HRD minister Kapil Sibal said in a written reply.

He said, "Lack of evidence of quality research, and that freedom and flexibility in matters of admission, intake capacity, programmes and fee structure had not been exercised in a responsible manner".

This is the first time, the HRD ministry has explained the reason behind its effort to blacklist 44 deemed universities across India. The case is currently pending before the Supreme Court. (IANS)
