JK govt spends Rs 43 cr under SSA in Kargil district

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir government is spending over Rs 43 crore to build infrastructure for the success of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Kargil district. The amount will be used for construction of school buildings, additional class rooms, opening of new schools and up-gradation of schools in the district, an official spokesman said today. He said 75 new primary schools, 78 Education Guarantee Centres (EGC), 56 Cluster Resource Centres and 19 computer Block Resource Centres have been established in the district so far.

Similarly, 143 primary schools and 78 EGCs have been upgraded to the level of middle and primary schools respectively, he added. The spokesman said 653 Rehbar-e-Taleem (RT) teachers, education volunteers and other required staff have also been engaged under the programme. School buildings have been constructed under the SSA in the district for 160 primary schools, 19 middle schools and 35 block resource centres, he said adding that 217 additional class rooms were also constructed besides providing drinking water and toilet facilities in 28 schools.

He said under Prime Minister's package Rs 8.30 crore have been utilised for construction of 11 higher secondary and high school buildings in the district. Besides, additional class rooms were also constructed in six high schools under the programme. Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme, as many as 94 schools of the district are being provided drinking water facilities by the end of this year. An amount of Rs 1.36 crore has been earmarked for the purpose, he said, adding so far 35 schools have been provided with such facilities. (PTI)
