| Lucknow: About 30 students were hospitalised after having lunch under the mid-day meal scheme in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district, an official said today. "The condition of all the students is now stable," education official Satish Tiwari informed. "The exact cause of the incident is yet to be established. All the edible stock of the school has been sealed and will be sent lab testing," Tiwari said. The school headmaster has been suspended with immediate effect.
Under the mid-day meal scheme, described as the world's largest for feeding schoolchildren, the Daniyapur government primary school had provided pulses, chapattis and panjiri (a sweet dish prepared with flour) to its students on Thursday. About 150,000 schools are covered under the mid-day meal scheme in Uttar Pradesh. Under the scheme, lunch is provided to students of various classes till eight standard. Over 18.6 million students are enrolled under the scheme in the state. (IANS) |
