Chinese intrusion at IIM-A

Ahmedabad: Following to the ferocity between China and India, around 60 students at Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), India's premier B-school, are learning Chinese.

Taking a cue from the development in the neighboring country, these final year students of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) are showing keen interest in Chinese. China is fast emerging as a flourishing economy and the students are tramping through the calligraphy to learn Chinese, as they believe that it will upgrade their Cvs. To give lectures on the elective course, a language teacher has been appointed from China's Xinjiang University.

The sudden interest towards the Chinese language is the result of benchmark elevation in the economy and focus towards a market economy. Moreover a fine understanding of Chinese culture, besides language, are fast evolving as interesting subjects to management graduates across the globe.

Students confess that basic idea of Chinese can help them to exchange pleasantries with the Chinese nationals and strengthening business ties with them as China is going to be thriving economy world-wide in the next 10 to 15 years. The nation is collaborating with foreign companies and is developing strategy to penetrate business in other countries also. This can also foresee business ties with India in the near future.

An increasing number of international corporate firms are establishing their offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong which triggers them to learn their language as it is very important to understand culture etiquette in business dealings. With five sessions, Business Chinese is included in the curriculum as an elective course.

China Mobile, Bank of China, Gome Electrical Appliances Holdings, Lenovo Holdings, PetroChina and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank are among some major Chinese firms which are considered as top-notch in employment market across the globe.

Equity firms like Carlyle Group, Bain Capital and TPG have currently signed pacts with Chinese firms. Private equity firms are among the major employers at the IIM-A campus.
