| Dehra Dun: A week after the Centre accorded central varsity status to H N Bahuguna Garhwal University, Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri has sought the same status to Kumaon University. While giving thanks to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for granting central university status to Garhwal University, Khanduri, in a letter to him, said given the regional aspirations of the Kumaon area, it was imperative that central university status should be accorded to Kumaon University, an official release said today.
"The grant of central university status only to the Garhwal University would deprive the Kumaon region of the spin-off benefits that a central university brings for higher education," Khanduri said, adding Kumaon and Garhwal are the two distinct regions of the hill state. In his letter, Khanduri said that he had written to Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh requesting for central university status to three universities of the state -Garhwal University, Kumaon University and Doon University.
