Distance education for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees free of cost

Chennai: In a bid to improve the condition of the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, the University of Madras has come up a novel programme to offer free distance higher education to the refugees currently residing in Indian and Sri Lankan camps. The distance education programme will commence from the next academic year.

While talking to the media, Madras University Vice-Chancellor G Thiruvasagam stated that the decision to offer free distance education to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in Indian and Sri Lankan camps, was unanimously taken in a recent meeting.

Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in South India V Krishnamoorthy has been invited by the university on January 18 to discuss on the various aspects of the programme.

The Vice Chancellor also added that the director of the state rehabilitation centre would be there in the meeting to provide valuable inputs on the education status of the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. Further processing of the programme will be made after seeking permission from the state, the Centre and Sri Lankan government.
