India says 'No' to Universities seeking business

Mumbai, April 15:: India will no longer welcome universities who are seeking to make profits here and make education a business. This includes all the global private and public universities who are planning to open up their campuses in this nation and avail hefty returns on their investments. This is an attempt to prevent the rise of commercialism in the education field.

The proposals of many American and British universities for opening campuses in India were already rejected by the Indian government. The Foreign Education Providers' Bill has been introduced by the Union HRD (Human Resources Development) ministry to curb the attempts of the foreign universities to commercialize the education system of India.

As per the regulations of this bill, foreign universities are also prevented from transferring Indian currencies to their own nations thus securing the nation's economy. Universities who are enlisted with the stock market will not be permitted to set up their institutes in India. It also obligates the universities to deposit a minimum amount of 11 million US dollars.
