7 Indians among the toppers in global school exams

New Delhi: Indians are no doubt making their presence felt in every field. Be it a research work, technological advancement or education. They have been consistently performing well in global tests.

After three Indian students topped in the Cambridge International Examinations in November 2008, as many as seven Indians have figured among the toppers securing the highest in individual subjects of the global test for CIE's International General Certificate of Secondary Education (Class X) and Advance Subsidiary (Class XI) levels.

The toppers secured remarkable grades in combined science, art and design, Hindi, business studies and English exams. The exams were held in June 2009 and the results were declared last Friday.

Karan Handa of British School is among the prominent achievers who topped in Art and Design in the IGCSE exam. Graham Ranger, Director of British School, expressed his happiness of having a topper in Karan from his institute.

Statistics reveal that 38% of Indian students manage to get grade A, which is 80% and above, against 33% of global students. Moreover the number of students obtaining top grades in their examinations in India has augmented to 38% in the current year as compared to 34% in 2007. Regional manager for South Asia, CIE, Ian Chambers have confirmed that Indians now feature 5% above the performance of the rest of the world.

Among other Indian toppers, Alokik Mishra of Choithram International, Indore secured highest in Accounting, Ajay Ravindran of Mallya Aditi International School, Bangalore, in Mathematics and Neil Surendra Satra of Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai in Mathematicsat the AS level in November 2008.

AS level is equivalent to Class XI while IGCSE corresponds to Class X boards in India. The total scores of AS and A level, which is equivalent to Class XI tests, are taken into consideration to calculate the results.

Toppers believe that CIE curriculum does not concentrate on rote learning but give more emphasis on analytical thinking, problem solving and application skills.
