Hindon: Commando units will be disposed in Naxal-inflicted areas to protect IAF choppers and men on board, confirmed IAF chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik. Clarifying further that the commandos should not be expected to perform "rambo-style" activities against the separatist group.

He informed the media that the Garud special forces would protect the choppers passing through the Maoist-infected regions for retrieving activities. They would also protect their officers and armaments by preventing attacks by separatists targeted at them.

On the 77th Air Force Day parade Naik quoted that the air force is not authorized to go out in the countryside and start firing like any action movie hero. The choppers performing casualty clearing functions will be guarded by Garud force.

When inquired about whether the IAF's plea to the government on permitting to open fire in the process of self-protection is accepted, Naik said that the Cabinet Committee on Security will look into the matter.

He express his displeasure in appointing the armed forces, Navy, Army and Air forces, to protect the nation from internal threats, as they are meant to ward-off threats across the border. The forces can be deployed to provide support in terms of casualty clearing and infusion of security forces only.
