Jaipur, Jan 28: The family of a 23-year-old married woman, who committed suicide, alleged on Friday that she killed herself following dowry harassment by her in-laws, said police, adding cases have been filed against her husband and others.

The incident took place in city's Shyam Nagar police station area late Thursday night.

"The deceased, Indu Devi Yadav, was pursuing a master of science degree from Malviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) and was married to Sudhir Yadav, a junior engineer in pollution board last year, " a police officer told the media.

"In-laws have told the police that she was found hanging in her bedroom. However, the family members suspect foul play saying the woman had had recently told them many times that she was being harassed for dowry," said the officer.

He added that the woman's father Abhay Singh Yadav lodged a case with police on Friday accusing the in-laws of demanding a million rupees in cash and a car as dowry.

"The father says that he had to deposit Rs.10,000 in her daughter's bank account a week ago following the repeated demands by in-laws," the officer said.

He added the husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law have been booked under sections 498A (harassment for dowry) and 304B (dowry death) under the Indian Penal Code. (IANS)
