| Bangalore: The practice of smuggling seem to rule supreme inspite of rising awareness, as two suspected gold smugglers were caught red-handed at Bengaluru International Airport on Monday after the security found 2.786 kg of gold brought from Tanzania. Kirit Singh from Ahmedabad and Mohammed Alla Baksh from Bangalore were arrested after they arrived from Dubai in an Emirates flight.
Reports from the sources suggest that Baksh is an entrepreneur, who owns a gold-polishing business in Bangalore. Both of them brought the gold in 'dust' form. On treating them under heat, they could acquire more than 85 percent pure gold.
The news from the sources reveals that both Kirit and Baksh left for Africa on April 16. The first cause of suspicion was the discrepancy between their verbal responses and the written documents they were carrying. They claimed the gold was purchased from a mine in Ghana, while the bills are actually from Tanzania. Moreover, they were short of any relevant documents for bringing the gold dust from Africa to India. The customs investigators suspect a lobby of goldsmiths, who are behind the purchase of such heavy amount of gold dust. The officials are carrying on with the investigation process. |
