Kolkata: Despite the restriction implemented by Trai some groups of telecom service providers are encouraging distributors to sell preactivated SIM cards to the customers. This can certainly mean that the SIM card issued in your name may be in the hands of a stranger, who may turn out to be a terrorist.

In a recent raids conducted by the West Bengal police on Sunday 80 such preactivated GSM SIM cards have been seized from Serampore. The common customers, who are not aware about the racket falls in trap as they get an easy bargain for just Rs 10.

The interesting part is the customers, under whose names the SIMs have been illegally activated, will not come to know about the ongoing corruption unless they get wrongly charged at some point of time for their cellphones being used for criminal purpose.

The 26/11 attackers are believed to have used preactivated SIMs. Even the terrorists have resorted to such SIMs while plotting 2008 Guwahati serial blasts. Report says that one of the SIMs used by the 26/11 terrorists were issued in Kolkata in exchange of the papers of a dead man who has no link whatsoever with criminal world.

It was on Sunday that police spotted a group of local youths who were public selling SIMs near Serampore station. When the local cellphone traders approached the youths in the guise of customers they enticed them to purchase the SIMs and activate that right after buying them.
