Lucknow: An idol worth nearly Rs.10 crore (Rs.100 million) in the international market was recovered from Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur town, police said today.

The incident occurred on Monday night when police was patrolling the outskirts of the town, about 200 km from Lucknow. Even though nobody was arrested, police claim to have collected vital clues.

"We were patrolling the outskirts when we saw a man carrying a hand bag. As we asked him to stop, he threw the bag and ran away. We recovered this idol, probably of goddess Sita, and it weighs over nine kg," said a police officer.

Police suspect the involvement of local businessman Mithailal who has been nabbed a number of times for buying stolen valuables.

"A team of the Delhi Police, along with us, raided the house of Mithailal on Sep 12 and recovered a huge amount of gold jewellery that was looted from Rajauri garden locality. We suspect that the person carrying this idol was his son as both of them have been involved in this trade for a long time and are black listed," the police officer added. (IANS)
