Dharmshala: The government of Himachal Pradesh is planning to open five more Forest Police Stations in various part of the state very shortly to check smuggling of forest wealth. One Forest Police Station has recently opened in Chaila of Shimla district. Himachal Pradesh has a forest cover of 27.5 per cent which is under threat from wood smugglers. Forest Minister J P Nadda told that the purposed forest Police Stations would start functioning very shortly. He further added that after Chaila, Kullu district, Shimla and Sirmaur will have one station each and two others will be set up in Mandi.

Locations have been identified for setting up 10 more police stations in phased manner. He said these stations located at strategic points of the forest areas would be well-equipped and headed by a deputy ranger. The objective behind opening of 'forest Stations ' is to check rampant smuggling of timber and trees. "Each forest station would have half-a-dozen guards equipped with revolvers and vehicle," he said, adding they would work in coordination with the police station of the area.

Similar forest police stations are working successfully in Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
