Mumbai, Aug 3: Mumbai may consider itself the safest city in the country, but the recent statistics prove its conviction wrong as the metropolis registered 178 rape cases in 2009.
Delhi, like almost every year, has once again stolen the limelight as the most unsafe city in India with a whopping 452 rape cases last year. If women's safety is a Utopian concept in the capital city, the situation is no less grim in the commercial capital.
Mumbai is not a case in isolation as the whole of Maharashtra is soon becoming a hub of eve-teasers and loonies waiting on the women as their prey. As per National Crime Record Bureau, Maharashtra has witnessed more than 1,500 cases of rapes across the state. Moreover, the state criminal investigation department reveals that hardly 15% accused in rape cases were convicted of the crime.
In a rather unexpected turn of events, Bihar and Rajasthan the two states known for their notoriety have come behind Maharashtra. The states registered 1,450 and 1,430 cases respectively. However, Madhya Pradesh leads the states with 2,900 cases. West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh come second and third with 2,400 and 1,900 cases respectively.
When it comes to cities, Mumbai finds itself on top. However, the reports say that the city suffers from poor conviction rate. In the last five years, the conviction rate in Mumbai has not increased to more than 20%.
In 90% of the rape cases registered in Mumbai either close relation are responsible for the crime. According to Mumbai police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal, the investigation is such cases is mostly a prolonged phenomenon. He also called for a fast trial of such cases. |
