GSM operators owe Rs 451 crore to the government |

| New Delhi, Aug 5: GSM operators in the country reportedly owe government over Rs 451 crore in license fee and spectrum charges.
In a recent revelation by Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot, it came out in the open that major GSM players like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communication and other small GSM telephone operators owe more than Rs 451 to government.
While declaring the status in the Rajya Sabha, Pilot added that the total outstanding amount as on March 31, 2010 is Rs 451.74 crore.
Bharti Airtel reportedly owes the highest amount to the government. The major GSM player has to pay Rs 135.11 crore in spectrum charges and another Rs 0.44 crore in license fee dues.
Vodafone also shares a bulk of the outstanding amount as the company owes Rs 71.77 crore towards spectrum charges.
Reliance Communications owes Rs 48.54 crore to the government.
The operators have however challenged the basis of calculations of the outstanding amount and the matter has been taken up by Supreme Court. The next date of hearing is on August 11. |
