Chennai: Malaysian company Scomi International, the partner of Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) for the Mumbai monorail project, is scouting for a suitable site and partner to build its Indian monorail car plant.

"We are looking at three centres to build our monorail car plant. The investment on the plant will be around Rs.200 crore (Rs.2 billion) to roll out around 200 cars per annum. We are also open to a joint venture and are talking to some parties," Kanesan Veluppillai, president, Scomi International told media.

He, however, declined to divulge more details on the location and the proposed partner.

Scomi is looking for a 10-acre-plot for the plant and it will locate it near its client's place.

Currently, Scomi is involved in implementing the Rs.2,460-crore monorail project, partnering with L&T in Mumbai. The first phase of the 20 km-project will be tested with a single car that has arrived from Malaysia, he said.

Veluppillai said the first phase measuring a distance of 10 km will be operational this December and the other phase six months later.

The group has mooted a monorail project for Bangalore and will be looking at contracts in other metros like Chennai and Delhi, he said. (IANS)
