New Delhi: Around 170,000 posts are vacant in the Indian Railways, the government said on Thursday. The vacancies include some 32,600 posts reserved for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes, Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

"Filling up the vacancies of reserved as well as unreserved posts is a continuous process. Some vacancies always remain due to non-availability of eligible empanelled candidates in the recruitment and promotional grades," he said.

Velu said when there are no eligible candidates to fill vacancies created by promotions, recruitments are made directly "from open market". (IANS)
