Six core sectors grew by 9.4 percent in January

New Delhi: Key sectors of the economy grew 9.4 percent in January against 6 percent the previous month, official data released today said.

According to the data released by the commerce and industry ministry, electricity production increased 5.6 percent in January 2010, crude oil 9.7 percent, petroleum refinery products 3.8 percent, coal 6 percent, cement 12.4 percent and finished carbon steel 16.2 percent.

The six sectors have a weight of 26.7 percent in the index of industrial production (IIP) that measures country's factory output.

The six core industries grew 2.2 percent in December 2008 and 3 percent during April-January 2008-09.

During April-January 2009-10, crude oil production declined 0.1 percent while petroleum refinery production was down 0.5 percent.

On the other hand, coal grew 8.2 percent, electricity 6.1 percent, cement 11.2 percent and finished carbon steel by 4.9 percent during April-January 2009-10. (IANS)
