One out of three in India is poor: Tendulkar panel

New Delhi: The Tendulkar panel that has been appointed by the central government has reported that one of three people in India can be termed as poor. The committee has revealed that the percentage of people under the poverty line has increased to more than 37 percent from 10 percent.

This group of experts is headed by Suresh Tendulkar who was formerly the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council of the Indian prime minister. In his poverty report Tendulkar said that 41.8 percent of the rural Indian populace makes do with INR 447 on a monthly basis. They spend this amount on basic necessities such as food, clothing, fuel, footwear and lighting.

As per the report of the Tendulkar commission there is a better situation at the urban areas. Here the average monthly expenditure is INR 578.8 and the percentage of people who may be classed as poor is 25.7 percent.

On a state level Bihar and Orissa are the worst affected. States such as Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi have least amount of people who could be regarded as poor. As per the estimates of the World Bank 41.6 percent of people, living in India, earn less than $1.
