| New Delhi, July 27: When it is said that India is made up of different nations it cannot be called an overstatement. This is indeed reflected from a comparison of developmental statistics that pits Indian states against countries from around the world.
As per a poverty index, which can be termed many dimensional, Goa and Kerala are shown to be developing at rates that are similar to Indonesia, which is regarded as a middle income nation.
However, for states like Bihar and Jharkhand the rates of development are similar to countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo that may be termed as a least developed country.
The United Nations Development Programme and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative released the fresh MPI measure of poverty early July 2010. The new measure tries to look into matters other than just income to get a broader view of the various problems faced by the poor. The index takes into account ten weighted indicators, which gauge factors such as education, standard of living and health.
As per the index Kerala is the best state with an index of 0.065. Its development mirrors that of Philippines and Paraguay. Goa has an index of 0.094 and its rate of development is similar to that of Indonesia.
MPI indicates that Punjab has developed like Guatemala and Himachal Pradesh has developed similar to Morocco. Tamil Nadu has an index of 0.141 and its development is like Ghana. Ghana is well known for its exceptional levels of governance of all sub-Saharan nations. However, it is still marked as a low income nation.
The states in north eastern India are shown to be similar to Haiti when it comes to development. Haiti is regarded as the poorest nation in the Americas. The development rate of West Bengal is similar to Ivory Coast. Orissa can be equated with Chad and Rajasthan with Mauritania and Tanzania.
Madhya Pradesh is in a slightly better condition compared to Rwanda and DRC with regards to development. Bihar is better off than Somalia but on the same level with Sierra Leone. |
