| Srinagar, June 10: Kashmir may be known as a spice destination for majority of Indians but recently the demand for Kashmiri spices has witnessed a sea dive.
Importers from abroad have shied away from demanding spices and that is a reason enough to cause anxiety among the exporters who out the blame on power tariff hike and the economic slowdown.
According to Mohammad Sadiq Bakal, the President of Traders and Manufacturers Federation, export of spices has witnessed a gradual dip in the last few years. Bakal also added that the power hike in industries as announced by the government will have an adverse impact on the trade.
Spice manufacturers, however, blames it on global recession. They have come up with statistics, which reveal that spice export has registered a dip of almost 40 per cent since recession seeped in.
There has always been a huge demand for spices like turmeric and fennel powder among the Kashmiris. Moreover, the people from the other parts of the country count heavily on Kashmir for saffron and mixtures like Kashmiri Rajma and Chaat masala. |
