| New Delhi: India is grabbing the world's attention and that too for a good reason. It was back in 2006 that India surpassed Denmark and became the fourth largest producer of wind energy in the world. The country has witnessed progress in leaps and bounds in this segment since then.
The villages in western India bear testimony to the countrys huge potential to generate electricity. According to the reports, hundreds of windmills in the villages generate over 1000 mega watts of electricity.
Dhule, an obscure town in Maharashtra, has the reputation of housing Asia's largest wind mills project. This is not the end. Suzlon, an Indian company ranks among the world's top manufacturers of wind turbines. It was just a textiles firm even a few years back. Suzlon is now credited for setting up large-scale wind mill projects in countries like China and Australia.
Bajaj Auto Limited, which is among the earliest investors in wind energy, now gets about 90 percent of its power from the wind. Many corporate houses are following the steps of Bajaj Auto.
It is to be noted that India is tapping wind energy to generate more than 8,000 mega watts electricity and further development is expected to take place very soon. India eyes around $21 billion worth of investments in renewable energy during the 2007-2012 Five-Year Plan period. |
