| New Delhi: India's resource of nuclear power is expected to witness a sharp rise as the country will obtain 50 percent of its power from atomic energy by 2050, the country's nuclear chief stated in an interview on Wednesday. According to Anil Kakodkar, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, proportion of nuclear power by 2050 could reach 50 percent, amounting to 600-700 gigawatts provided India is able to bear the indigenous capability.
Till recently, India was eyeing to get around 25 percent of its energy from nuclear power by mid-century. However, in a recent statement, Kakodkar stated that the 25 percent target is expected to be achieved by 2020.
India presently counts on imports for about 70 percent of its oil needs. It was only in the last month that Kakodkar refused to allow foreign direct investment in India's nuclear field. |
