|New Delhi, Nov 15: In yet another consolidation in the publishing industry after the announcement of the Penguin Books and Random House merger early this month, Egmont UK has appointed Penguin-India as their exclusive distributor in the country, which is also one of the biggest English reading markets in the world.
Egmont is a leading publisher of children's books and journals in the UK.
In a joint statement issued by Egmont and Penguin, Gillian Laskier, the group sales director of Egmont UK, said: "Penguin has an unparalleled position in the Indian market for the last 25 years with a distribution network which is second to none. We are delighted to add our portfolio including Tintin, Enid Blyton and Mr Men to the range of children's titles they bring to the market in India."
Andrew Phillips, CEO and president of Penguin India, said the strength of Egmont's famous brands together with the quality of Penguin's sales, marketing and broad distribution and reach will allow the partnership to reach out to the widest market segments.
"We are excited to work with Egmont and being able to bring a bigger catalogue of their great titles to the Indian markets," Phillips said.
The new arrangement will be effective from January 2013.
Estimates say India has more than 300 million users of the English language. (IANS)
