| New Delhi, May 3: The government today in principle approved proposals by private carriers IndiGo Airlines and Paramount Airways to acquire more aircraft.
The Aircraft Acquisition Committee (AAC) of the civil aviation ministry met here and gave the approvals.
However, a ministry official said the approval given to Chennai-based Paramount would be turned down once the AAC report is sent to other concerned agencies for approval.
According to him, the airline, does not meet the requirements as a scheduled operator.
The airline's licence was suspended earlier as rules stipulate that a scheduled airline must have a fleet of five aircraft. Paramount has only one aircraft.
Low-cost airline IndiGo currently has a fleet of 30 aircraft and plans to acquire 150 more aircraft by 2015.
Both IndiGo and Paramount Airways will be eligible to start international operations by next year.
The current norms stipulate that an airline should have completed five years of domestic operations and have a fleet of 20 aircraft for flying internationally.
There were 19 other proposals largely related to starting non-scheduled operations, said an official present at the committee meeting. (IANS) |
