Kolkata, April 28: Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia today started flights between Chennai and Penang, the airline said today.

In a statement, the airline also said the Kuala Lumpur-Chennai service will start on May 17, 2010.

It quoted the chief minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng, as saying that the affordable fares offered by AirAsia would help attract more tourists from India.

"In 2009, we had approximately 470,000 international tourists visiting Penang, but only 7,000 are from India. That only makes up 1.5 percent of total international tourist arrivals in Penang," said Lim.

Called Malaysia's "Pearl of the Orient", Penang is rich in natural beauty and cultural splendour. Thousands of tourists visit the place to experience its cultural heritage and scenery. (IANS)
