New Delhi: Justice Liberhan has defended himself against allegations that he has indicted former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his much talked about report on the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.

It may be recalled that Liberhan has said in his report that Vajpayee was a supposed moderate when the Ayodhya movement was on. The report also condemned prominent BJP leaders such as Murli Manohar Joshi and Lal Krishna Advani, who too have been levelled as pseudo moderates, for the sins of omission that they supposedly committed.

It has been said that his supposed indictment of Vajpayee has flouted the Commission of Inquiry Act of 1952’s Section 8B. However, Liberhan has asked people to read the report and provide a single instance where Vajpayee has been accused.

He appears to be confident that no accusations of irresponsible referencing could be made against his report. Liberhan also said that a certain section of his report has been misconstrued and is not being read in the proper context.

In the 942nd page of the report it has been mentioned that under no circumstances it could be assumed that Vajpayee, Joshi or Advani were unaware of the plans of the Sangh family. It has been also stated that these leaders would not have been able to defy the orders of the Sangh family or the RSS.

Else they would have had to retire as BJP leaders. The report also states that these leaders cannot be absolved of culpability and be given a benefit of doubt. The report also accuses them of violation of popular trust and functioning as per the wishes of a handful of individuals.
