Mumbai, Aug 31: One of the main reasons often stated behind the problems in Kashmir is its economy. The Indian government has only recently set up a committee to find ways in which the economic and employment sectors in Kashmir can be improved. However, the state's economy may not be as bad as it is made out to be - as is evident from economic statistics.

As per statistics of factor cost, based on 1999-00 prices, the per capita net state domestic product of Jammu and Kashmir was Rs 17,590 in 2007-08. This is more than Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Jammu and Kashmir is also one of the prominent states of India as far as CSO figures are concerned. It is also one of the states to have received the maximum amount of money from the Indian government. In 2008-09 the revenue of Jammu and Kashmir amounted to Rs 19,362 crores. At least 70 percent of this money came from grant provided by the central government.
